2013 Good Heart Art Exhibition set to open in Perth

The 2013 Good Heart Art Exhibition will soon open in Perth after a spectacular preview of the exhibition finishes up in Geraldton today.

Almost 200 pieces from over 50 new and established mid-west artists will be showcased in Perth from 10-14 June, and all artwork will be for sale with proceeds going to the artists.

This will be the Good Heart Art's sixth exhibition, sponsored by Oakajee Port and Rail.

The exhibition will run from Monday 10 June - Friday 14 June 2013,  10am to 4pm daily, in the foyer of the QV1 Building, 250 St Georges Terrace, Perth.

Good Heart 2013 Calls for Indigenous Artworks

There is just over a week left for Indigenous artists from the mid-west to submit contributions to be considered for the Good Heart 2013 art exhibition.

Now in its sixth year, the Oakajee Port and Rail Good Heart Aboriginal Art Project showcases traditional and contemporary works by emerging and established mid-west artists to a metropolitan audience.

The main exhibition will take place in Perth from 10-14 June 2013, after a preview in Geraldton from 13-27 May.

Works must be submitted for consideration by Wednesday 1 May 2013.

Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Awards

Indigenous artists are encouraged to enter the 2013 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards.

The awards, now in their 30th year, recognise the important contribution made by Indigenous artists and promote the understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art from both regional and urban Australia.

The Grand Prize is $40,000, with five additional $4,000 awards in various other categories.

Entries close 15 March 2013.

Aboriginal artists wanted for 2012 Good HeART exhibition

Following on from four years of showcasing traditional and contemporary works by mid-west Aboriginal artists to regional and metropolitan audiences, Good HeART is back again for 2012.

An initiative of Oakajee Port and Rail, the exhibition attracts artists from communities all over the region, including Wiluna, Mullewa, Northampton, Meekatharra, Mt Magnet, Cue, Yalgoo and Morawa.

A preview of the show will be held in Geraldton from 21 May to 2 June, and the main exhibition will be staged in Perth's CBD from 18-22 June. All proceeds from sales go directly to the artists.

Works, including ceramics, woodwork, canvas, artefacts and textiles, must be submitted for consideration by 4 May 2012.

Welcome to Country artwork will greet visitors to WA's new hospital

YMAC is pleased to learn that huge pieces of Aboriginal artwork have been comissioned for the new Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth. Aboriginal artists Ella Taylor (Kidja Heritage), Wendy Hayden (Nyoongar Heritage) and Deborah Bonar (Gija and Yamatji) have developed the sixteen metres of artwork on glass and a huge canvas in colaboration with the owner of the Kidogo Institute of Art, Joanna Robertson.

The artwork features representations of each of the five main regions of WA. “We wanted Aboriginal patients and visitors from anywhere in Australia to feel more comfortable when they come to the hospital,” explained Deborah Bonar.

“We felt as soon as they see the grasses and recognise the Aboriginal style of artwork, their first impression will be that they are in a place with familiar elements, in a place sympathetic to Aboriginal people, that respects Aboriginal values and connection to country and in turn will make them more comfortable and feel welcomed.”

Ms. Bonar has also been selected by the Revealed ArtWorker Program as one of three artists who will curate the art exhibition during CHOGM.

The Fiona Stanley Hospital is due to open in 2014, and the Welcome to Country artwork will acknowledge the Traditional Owners and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of WA's Indigenous people.
